random thing that bugs me a lot: people debating over the “real gender” of any fictional character that’s never had one mentioned
rather than just using genderless pronouns
or even like.. assuming that maybe just MAYBE this character that’s never mentioned a gender actually doesn’t HAVE one??
I’m pretty frickin’ sure that Crona from Soul Eater is intended to be genderless, but noooo instead everyone is like “I’m sure they have a gender even though nobody has ever mentioned it, including both the author and Crona themself”
and its apparantly REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT to figure out this goddamn gender, and people will look for tiny “clues” that don’t even make any sense, and somehow those are more important than what the character actually says…
..And then I really, really hate when genderless characters are just given a gender in the dub because “its easier” or “to avoid controversy”.
Crona is a weird case because the show itself turns them into a boy, but then they left in all the references to gender ambiguity (which now make no sense), and the directors’ commentary constantly goes on about how the character’s gender is unknown. Apparantly it was just because “it’s easier that way” rather than censorship, which is a stupid attitude to take towards translation…
Yeah, remove major character traits and censor out the existance of an entire gender minority just to avoid having to use a pronoun with *gasp* two extra letters and minor grammatical differences/”flaws”.
